What is the Church? is a church history class, church government class, and practical help in relation to staying at a church. R.C Sproul starts with a church history class. The beginning lays the foundation of the book. I have personal taken two church history class and while this is a mere brush stroke in the realm of history. The brush stroke hits all the key parts in the formation and doctrine of the church. He presents the main reasons for the reformation (sola fida and sola scriptura). He presents the heresy through out the church, which was the foundation of most of the churches creeds. Sproul goes to the present and looks at what is required to be a church. The defining part of the book for me is reading some who also believes that not all churches are truly churches. The author stays in the current to discuss the pattern of churches and how they are drawing further away from the doctrines that made them. The best part of the book hands down was the practical help he provides at the end on whether or not a person should leave the church.
The entire book is written so that anyone can read and understand. He explains all hard concepts and important Greek words. His time spent in the etymology can be difficult of you do not read closely and follow his thought process. Overall the book is a great concise read that could help a person stay in unity with other believers and with the church that they serve in and glorify God.
About Author: R.C Sproul is the leader and founder of Legionier Ministries, which was created out of a demand for his teaching. He also broadcasts Renewing your Mind with R.C Sproul. Sproul holds degrees from Westminster College, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and Free University of Amsterdam.
